The Hand that Rocks the Cradle

Well, of course I'm going address the insult heard 'round the world -- The Today Show's piece on "mommy bloggers." And that's what I thought it was, an insult. Although, frankly, the entire piece was so disjointed that it was a little difficult to figure out WHAT their message really was. Was it about the power of mommy bloggers in product pushing? Was it about how much money you can make as a blogger? Or was it about how dangerous and weird it is to air all your personal trials and tribulations for everybody in the world to read? I'm really not sure.

What I do know is that it only slightly touched on the best thing I've discovered since I started blogging, and which is the topic that I hear most often when I talk to other bloggers, which is the community that we've all found. When I started my blog just a scant few months ago, I had no idea that it would foster friendships. And I do consider my blog friends to be true friends. I've met some of you. Some of you I may never meet. But I know you. And I think you know me. When times are tough, we have friends we can turn to. And it's okay to share those tough times because you know these women (and a few men!) have been through the similar experiences. When someone's having a rough day, we all know about it and we try to give that person a boost. When someone celebrates an accomplishment, we celebrate too.

So, if Kathie Lee Gifford doesn't get it, that's fine. She just doesn't know what she's missing out on.

(Funny aside, I just ran spellcheck and the word "blogger" keeps getting flagged. Um, Blogspot? I think you of all people need to add that to your dictionary. Don't you think?)

Yes it was disjointed! And ended so abruptly. Wonder why? I think KLG was about to have her ass handed to her.

You are so right about blogging. Power To The Bloggers! hehehe
I came home from work and David told me he had seen Dooce on TV and I gasped, "The Great Mother Blogger of us all!"
I worship her.

1st time on your blog. Love it!! I didn't hear about this piece and I would have been annoyed even though I am a fairly new blogger. In just over a month, I already feel a connection with some people I don't know and I find them and people like you more fascinating than celebs like KLG. She is probably missing out because her life is so far from simplistic, has jaded her and taken her away from what truly matters which is simple and true human connection. Sorry, got cheesy on ya. Feel free to visit me sometime. P.S. I am SO sorry about your child being sick like that. My heart goes out to you.

I missed the piece on mommy bloggers. Probably a good thing, too. I honestly can't beleive that KLG doesn't get it. Of all the people who love to go on and on about their kids and their daily life and she doesn't get it?

*shrug* I'm glad I get it and I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of this amazing community. I have learned so much from other mommy bloggers! I've never been so excited about a "hobby" as I am about blogging!

I didn't see it either. But from what I've read here and other places it sure seems like a lot assumptions were made based on a HANDFUL of bloggers. I think the majority of my "bleeps", myself included, are doing this for ourselves with no thought of return other than the sense of community.

It was an interesting piece of news, that's for sure. And I'm really glad that KLG isn't part of our blogging world.

Personally, blogging has been my salvation in many ways. I was in a difficult rut when I started my blog back in December and since then I have found (and defined) my purpose in life. I have found support in other moms and I believe I have become a better mom because of it. KLG is an idiot so we can't expect too much out of her.

It's not possible to call friends up or be round their house at the times you need their advice or support most. Blogging also fills the humour gap.

My family thought I was odd to blog, but ever since I made a fabulous cake from a blog recipe, they've been very encouraging.

It's the 'what's in it for me' factor. Clearly, there's not much in it for KLG if we are all off having more fun with each other.

Yeah, KLG is a blithering idiot.

And when I talk face-to-face with people, I usually refer to all my bloggy friends as "my friend so-and-so...". Having you and some of the other gals around as friends has really made some tough times more bearable (even if I being unbearable...ha ha)...particularly since I'm so far from all my close friends and family. All of you have given me more ideas and feedback on my kids than even my friends physically here in town with me. And I appreciate that. ;)
